has been made very clear by the president to be of great concern to us. >> shepard: tonight, a new warning from the u.s. for the syrian regime. plus, pope francis today officially installed as the leader of the world's 1.2 billion catholics. >> i'm very excited for the new pope. >> shepard: tonight the pope's humble message of hope and tears of joy in home country of argentina. and the chilling account of a gunpoint confrontation with the university of central florida attack plotter. >> [inaudible] >> tonight the roommate of the now dead suspect speaks. >> first from fox this tuesday night, u.s. marines confirm now they have issued a complete ban on one of the work horse weapons in all of their arsenal. it applies to all 670-millimeter mortars

after one exploded during a disastrous training exercise in nevada today. it's a blast that killed seven u.s. marines and hurt seven other service members. it actually happened last night at hawthorne army depot, it's a remote weapons storage and training facility about 100 miles south and east of reno. the mortar involved in the accident is similar to the one you see here. a brigadier general says the shell exploded while it was still in its launching tube and shrapnel went everywhere. to make matters worse, the helicopter rescues were reportedly very difficult because this happened at night in the middle of nowhere. the nearest major trauma center a 40 minute flight eachway. in fact, the military favors the area because the harsh terrain is similar to conditions in afghanistan. this afternoon, the marine division commanding general spoke about this tragedy. >> the marines were conducting live fire and maneuver training at the hawthorne army depot. we don't know yet what caused caused this malfunction. team of investigators has begun the investigation to

figure out just what happened. >> shepard: an official says the first part of that investigation will focus on whether marines were following proper procedures or whether that mortar simply malfunctioned. it's fox top story and jennifer griffin is live on us for us tonight pentagon. what are the number of dead and wounded tell us about what could have caused this? >> well, what we know, shepard, is that an investigation team is on the ground in nevada. the number of wounded and the number of dead tell us that something must have gone wrong with that 60-millimeter shell that was inside the tube. there were five people killed instantly. normally, it is a team of three who are surrounding the mortar position. so clearly some of them walked over to see what was going on, and they were killed instantly. we also know, of course, that it must have jammed and the wounded were taken. we know that two died waiting to be evacuated.

one died on route and seven more were wounded, shepard. >> shepard: what about reaction out of washington tonight, jen? >> president obama expressed condolences at saint patrick's day lunch on capitol hill while senate majority leader harry reid drew attention to budget cuts and how they could impact military training like that taking place at hawthorne. >> it's just not appropriate, mr. president, that our military can't train and do the maintenance necessary. these men and women, our marines were training there in hawthorne and with the sequester it's going to cut the stuff back. >> some marine officials chafed at reid's commence. his spokesman clarified his remarks saying the idea of senator reid thinks that the hawthorne tragedy has anything to do with the sequester is absurd, shepard. >> shepard: jennifer griffin at the pentagon now. the horrible plot at the university of central florida in orlando. tonight, it is very clear the plan was for another virginia tech. murder on a scale that

would forever change one of the biggest universities in america. you see, the student behind the foiled murder rampage wrote a checklist. and the last line "give them hell." just one of the many new details that police revealed today. there is a video from a camera that one officer had mounted on his uniform. look at this. [buzzer] >> team as shooter made its way into the dorm room yesterday just after midnight. that's the fire alarm in the background. investigators say the suspect pulled that alarm himself. the suspect in an attempt to get his fellow students out into the open to make them easy targets. the suspect's roommate managed to call 911. >> the fire alarm went off. i opened the door to see what was going on. and he is there with like some sort of like gun, like large assault gun. i don't know if it's a real gun or what it is. but i just saw it and i slammed my door shot and locked it. >> slammed it shut and

locked it officers arrived within three minutes. they say they found the shooter's body and they believe he killed himself. they found a stunning arsenal. homemade bombs, firearms, a thousand rounds of checklist. on it, his plan. get drunk at the mad hatter, a bar near the ucf campus. and the last item, one he had scratched off, pull the fire alarm. phil keating is in our florida newsroom this evening. phil, so much more found in the mail room. >> yeah. in a package addressed to the shooter, which arrived last tuesday but for whatever reason the shooter never picked it up from the mail room. inside that package, according to police, a sling for that automatic rifle or that tactical rifle. a training dvd for proper shooting style, as well as two additional magazine clips for that rifle. with the ammo drones recovered yesterday. you see james had about 1,000 rounds for his plan to shoot up the campus.

>> the deceased acted alone. we found no connections to any group, organization, are in anybody else that would have shown any involvement in this situation that occurred here at the university. >> as for those homemade bombs found inside his backpack, x-rays show two bottles of an unknown liquid. two cans of sterno and one box of bullets to act like shrapnel. >> shepard: the roommate who called 11, we are hearing from him. >> he said this roommate was pretty odd. never once did he see him talking on the cell phone. apparently he had no friends. last thanksgiving the roommate says the shooter actually made himself a full turkey dinner which he apparently ate all by himself. roommate says in the dorm room he would walk around the edge of their apartment so he would not have to pass by his roommates closely. >> i just thought he just kept to himself a lot. i don't know. i just thought he was a quiet, introverted person.

the only time he actually made solid eye contact with me was when he was pointing a gun at me. >> his family released a short statement saying james was a loner and did not have a history of violence. the family does not wish to make any further comment. still, motive here remains absolute mystery for police the university was in the process of expelling him. >> shepard: a teenager who shot to death three high schoolers. he removed his shirt and killer. he sat there wearing the shirt as students he murdered -- parents. he admitted that he did open fire with a .22 caliber handgun right in the high school cafeteria east of cleveland. it happened last year. the mother of the victim, one of them, called him a pathetic excuse for a human being and wished him a slow

torturous death. the judge sentenced him to three life sentences. no chance for parole. a new assault weapons ban will not be part of a gun control bill that the senate plans to debate next month. that's the new word from the senate majority leader harry reid. he says the ban isn't even close to getting the 60 votes it needs to it break a filibuster. the senate is still considering bills to expand background checks and crack down on gun traffickers and improve school safety. a limit on high capacity magazines also has a better chance of passing if it's not linked to that assault weapons ban. both sides in syria now accusing the other of using chemical weapons. a development that would be an enormous and devastating turn of events in that war torn country. the government claims rebel groups use the weapons in an attempt that reportedly killed more than two dozen people. the rebels deny it. they claim it was, in fact, the regime that launched the attack. but after more than two years of each side leveling accusations of murder and torture and increasingly

desperate employees for support for world powers. it's impossible to know who to believe. the regime claims the chemical attack happened outside of aleppo. syrian state media showed this video and reports it shows so. wounded. the people here do not bear any signs of any chemical warfare. no visible blisters or convulsions, discolored scand so forth. today the white house cast doubt on that government claim. the white house issued a stern warning nevertheless. >> the issue of the possibility of chemical weapons remains a great concern. you heard the president from this podium express his position when he said, quote: the use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable. and his warning to the syrian regime that, quote: there will be consequences and you will be held accountable. >> shepard: proof of a chemical attack could have enormous implications for u.s. policy when it comes to the civilian civil war. more on the red line in the

sand ahead. first "the fox report" wants correspondent jonathan hunt is live in our newsroom. hard to see how this would benefit the rebels. >> syrian government accusation would be that the rebels would carry out this kind of attack to provoke international sympathy and bring about more direct western intervention. frankly, u.s. officials aren't buying that theory. they think far more likely this was an attack carried out by the syrians. they are not clear on whether this was chemical weapons. but u.s. officials and the syrian opposition themselves say they simply are not in a position to carry out what the syrian government says they did. listen. >> the rebels don't have access to chemical weapons. they don't have access to the means of watching these chemical weapons. simply put, if chemical weapons were used and that's a big if, we are still trying to investigate that if these chemical weapons were used, the syrian government that had access to these chemical weapons and would have used them against civilian population. >> bottom line here, shep, u.s. officials believe that

an attack did take place today. it was probably a scud missile, and it was almost certainly launched by syrian forces. but they do not yet have definitive evidence of a chemical element to that attack. >> shepard: all right. even if no chemical attack, there are great fears that one could be in the future. >> yes. clearly u.s. officials are becoming increasingly concerned that assad president -- president assad cornered desperate, may turn to these sort of chemical weapons. now, if and as you heard there, it is a big if, if any chemical weapon was used today, unlikely that was sara ran or mustard gas. schedule one chemicals according to the chemical weapons geneva convention. more likely according to some witnesses it was chlorine there was according to at least one witness a smell of chlorine in the air. that is only a schedule 3 chemical weapon. that could provide wiggle

president obama warned that the use or movement of chemical weapons in syria could mean enormous cons scwebses. we have been very clear to assad regime but also to other players that a red line for us is that we start seeing a bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. that would change my calculus. >> shepard: middle east analysts say the syrian government has the largest stockpile in that region and forth fourth largest in all the world. james rosen at the white house. this isn't the first time they have had these accusations of the use of chemical weapons. >> in this conflict that's right, shep. the first such report dates back to this december that's when the regime of dictatorial president bashar assad reportedly deployed a chem weapon known as eight 15 which paralyzed the central nerve us is system. today it was unusual for the government there to even hint having lost control of some of its

stockpiles but mounting a chemical attack likely exceeded the known military capabilities of the rebel forces. we have no reason to believe these allegations represent anything more than the regime's discredit opposition and distract from own atrocities committed against the syrian people. >> speaking of the state department, it did not bode well for u.s. diplomacy that russia was so quick to blame the rebels. shep? >> shepard: influential lawmakers with calling for more involvement at least or at least stronger actions against syria. >> right. from the united states. these calls come from two members of the senate armed services committee. chairman carl levin, democrat of michigan told foreign policy.com's josh rogan he wants to see the u.s. help establish a no-fly zone over syria. lindsey graham republican senator from south carolina called for u.s. boots on the ground. quote we need to come up with a plan to secure these weapon sites either in

conjunction with our partners or if nothing else by ourselves. graham told josh rogan. you have got to get on the ground. i don't care what it takes. the white house held firm today saying its policy for now is that it will not be providing any lethal aid to the rebels. shep? >> shepard: james rosen at the white house tonight. well, a mixed day on wall street as investors around the world obviously eyed the island nation of cyprus where lawmakers rejected a controversial plan to qualify for a bailout. the dow made up for early losses and closed up but just four points. the nasdaq fell 8 the s&p off close to four. meantime markets in europe dropped over fears that the government of cyprus would tap into people's savings accounts. just reach in and get money to pay off its debt. in other words, a tax for just having money in the bank. protesters reportedly cheered after lawmakers voted against that proposal. the analysts say it puts any possible bailout in great question and could force that government into

bankruptcy. the fox business network's gerri willis is here with the details on this. does that government just collapse without this money? >> well, that's a great question. i can't answer it. it's not clear yes. the banks are closed right now. we don't even know if the banks are going to collapse. we are waiting to see what's going to happen with that in fact, they are just supposed to reopen thursday. they may not reopen until tuesday because there intank holiday on monday. rest assured the eu is not backing down here. they say they are not going to help unless the depositors pony up money. >> what does this mean for the rest of europe and the united states. >> the brits, this is interesting. they sent a military plane over with a million euros to go to their troops over there that's about $1.3 million. because they are paid in the local currency there. so, that's not good for them. but, the u.s., this could mean for us. we have seen it hit our markets pretty dramatically, right? now there are people speculating that the federal reserve may be forced to stick with this plan they have of buying bonds and keeping rates low

have found evidence of dried up rivers with the curiosity rover. rivers some 3 billion years old. why is that important, you ask? well, because they say it means life could have, indeed, once existed there. >> for the first time we are seeing an ancient environment on mars which is habitable. it just looks different than the planet does today instead of red, it's gray. there was plenty of water. >> curiosity landed on mars back in august, you might recall. the mission last one martian year. that translates into 687 earth days, shepard. we're about halfway through. >> shepard: all right. casey stegall in dallas tonight. cabin owners are now looking for what's left after a huge fire ripped through a mountain side resort. and that tops our news across newark. america. tennessee, the fire broke out late sunday night at a cabin near the north carolina border. heavy winds quickly fanned
